Lexical Editor
publishedGuide to using the Lexical rich text editor for content creation
Formatting Toolbar
The toolbar appears at the top of every rich text field. It provides the following formatting options:
- Bold — Emphasize important words or phrases
- Italic — Use for titles of publications, technical terms, or subtle emphasis
- Headings — H2 through H6 for structuring content hierarchy
- Ordered lists — Numbered lists for sequential steps or ranked items
- Unordered lists — Bullet lists for non-sequential collections
- Links — Add hyperlinks to internal pages or external URLs
- Images — Insert inline images within the text content
Use H2 for major sections and H3 for subsections within those. Avoid skipping heading levels (going directly from H2 to H4) as this breaks the content hierarchy and harms accessibility.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Common keyboard shortcuts for faster editing:
| Action | Windows / Linux | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | Ctrl+B | Cmd+B |
| Italic | Ctrl+I | Cmd+I |
| Underline | Ctrl+U | Cmd+U |
| Undo | Ctrl+Z | Cmd+Z |
| Redo | Ctrl+Shift+Z | Cmd+Shift+Z |
| Save draft | Ctrl+S | Cmd+S |
Inserting Blocks
To add a new block to the page layout:
- Scroll to the Layout section of the page editor.
- Click the Add Block button.
- Select the block type from the dropdown (Text Block, Grid Block, Quote Block, or Chart Block).
- Fill in the block's fields.
- Drag blocks to reorder them within the layout.
Blocks are separate from the Lexical editor's inline content. The Lexical editor handles rich text formatting within a Text Block, while the block system manages the overall page structure.
Undo and Redo
The Lexical editor maintains a full history of your changes within the current editing session. Use Ctrl+Z (or Cmd+Z on macOS) to undo and Ctrl+Shift+Z (or Cmd+Shift+Z) to redo. The history resets when you navigate away from the page or refresh.
Undo history is session-only. If you close the editor or navigate away, you cannot undo previous changes. Save drafts frequently to preserve your work.
